Spanish artist Josep Pla-Narbona is renowned for his upbeat work that comfortably fuses graphic design with fine art. This film portrait by his daughter, director Anna Pla-Narbona give an intimate glimpse into the artist’s life today, which has, since the mid 1970s, been devoted to his delicate paintings and drawings that take his signature tone to an often-surreal but cheerful place. ___ Subscribe to NOWNESS here: http://bit.ly/youtube-nowness Like NOWNESS on Facebook: http://bit.ly/facebook-nowness Follow NOWNESS on Twitter: http://bit.ly/twitter-nowness Daily exclusives for the culturally curious: http://bit.ly/nowness-com Behind the scenes on Instagram: http://bit.ly/instagram-nowness Curated stories on Tumblr: http://bit.ly/tumblr-nowness Inspiration on Pinterest: http://bit.ly/pinterest-nowness Staff Picks on Vimeo: http://bit.ly/vimeo-nowness Subscribe on Dailymotion: http://www.dailymotion.com/nowness Follow NOWNESS on Google+: http://bit.ly/google-nowness

The Hollywood Hills are peppered with several architectural wonders from pre-war Austrian and German designers. However, none lay quite as enveloped by its natural landscape as the 1947 Rudolph Schindler-built home of Pamela Shamshiri—the interior design maven whose client list includes Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway and musician Beck. Austrian architect Rudolph Schindler built Shamshiri’s Lautner house—named after the original proprietor—in the weeks following a visit to the prehistoric masonry dwellings of the Pueblo native Americans who built their homes into cliff faces. Wedged in a V-shape in the side of Laurel Canyon, the Lautner home captures the same spirit of the earthenware masonry homes that were both a part of nature and voyeurs on it. Shamshiri has frequently commented on how her home resembles a tree house; endless glass walls provide uninterrupted views of verdant nature in the valley beyond and below. Clerestory windows diffuse light throughout the building and sliding doors honor Schindler’s intention to create rooms that invite nature in. The LA-based designer spent eight years restoring the modernist building back to Schindler’s original design, aided by early black-and-white photographs, plans and drawings diligently archived by University of California Santa Barbara. Half a century and eight owners later, Shamshiri sandblasted 17 layers of paint to reveal the building’s natural grain, and tore down marble, drywall and black granite to showcase Schindler’s stainless steel fireplace and brick columns. Shamshiri also reinstated key furnishings such as built-in asymmetric sofas, a mirrored bar and a pull-out dining table. However, not all the renovations were beholden to the spirit of Schindler’s master plan. The galley kitchen was extended to fit more people and an entirely new Onsen-like bathroom was built, boasting a cedar tub and plywood cabinets. Shamshiri has matched her own design eye with Schindler’s philosophy of using low materials for high design to create a truly modernist family home, one which has been revealed as a gift to architectural history. ___ Subscribe to NOWNESS here: http://bit.ly/youtube-nowness Like NOWNESS on Facebook: http://bit.ly/facebook-nowness Follow NOWNESS on Twitter: http://bit.ly/twitter-nowness Daily exclusives for the culturally curious: http://bit.ly/nowness-com Behind the scenes on Instagram: http://bit.ly/instagram-nowness Curated stories on Tumblr: http://bit.ly/tumblr-nowness Inspiration on Pinterest: http://bit.ly/pinterest-nowness Staff Picks on Vimeo: http://bit.ly/vimeo-nowness Subscribe on Dailymotion: http://www.dailymotion.com/nowness Follow NOWNESS on Google+: http://bit.ly/google-nowness

American contemporary artist Jeff Koons brings some of his most celebrated works of art to Palazzo Strozzi in Florence for a major exhibition entitled 'Jeff Koons.Shine.' His work will be exhibited alongside loan objects from galleries and museums around the world, exploring the concept of “shine” in his work–an ambiguous idea that oscillates between the dualities of being and seeming, or truth and sensation. In 2013, his 10-foot-tall 'Balloon Dog' was auctioned for $58.4 million, setting a new record for the most expensive work ever sold by a living artist. The sale caused contention in the art world as critics and dealers struggled to assess the artist provocateur's work; some lauded Koons's irreverent pop-art aesthetic, while others dismissed his readymades as kitsch and childish... Occupying a once-abandoned church in a verdant valley a short drive from Bilbao, Venezuelan creative director, photographer and skateboarder Tas Careaga has envisioned a personal environment through his own creative parameters. When the community it served ceased to exist, Cargeaga acquired the church in the town of Sopuerta, its historic stone walls becoming the canvas for a curatorial vision shaped by anachronistic elements. …read more at nowness.com _______________________________________ Subscribe to NOWNESS here: http://bit.ly/youtube-nowness Like NOWNESS on Facebook: http://bit.ly/facebook-nowness Follow NOWNESS on Twitter: http://bit.ly/twitter-nowness Daily exclusives for the culturally curious: http://bit.ly/nowness-com Behind the scenes on Instagram: http://bit.ly/instagram-nowness Staff Picks on Vimeo: http://bit.ly/vimeo-nowness

Like a fossil embedded in stone, the art of internationally renowned sculptor and designer Michele Oka Doner is imprinted into the fabric of her SoHo loft home. Instead of walls, Oka Doner’s elegant studio apartment is shaped by the flotsam and jetsam of conch shells and minerals, separating the kitchen from the lounge, and dried bark and petrified tree roots that divide the piano from the dinning table. For the latest In Residence the Miami Beach native opens her home, where we see gold, bronze, clay, wood, wax and paper—the earth’s raw materials—which form the foundation of her art. Oka Doner’s work ebbs and flows between the handmade and the organic, inspired by world histories and folklore. “The sheer breadth of her interests and influences made for one of the most fascinating conversations of my career,” says episode director Max Hemmings. “She makes such remarkable connections—everything from Herbert Read to Ötzi the Iceman—as if drawing on a whole library at will.” Naturally occurring shapes and patterns are a key theme in Oka Doner’s work, perhaps her most famous being A Walk On The Beach, a one-mile stretch of tropical seeds and 9,000 unique aquatic bronzes embedded into a terrazzo floor in Miami International Airport. The designer’s many projects also decorate her sizeable apartment. On the far wall is an enormous ink drawing of mother-of-pearl under a microscope. Hanging near the entrance is Soul Catchers, a 450-piece collection of glazed porcelain skulls that have the appearance of being eroded away by ocean currents. Just like her home, Oka Doner’s enduring 40-year career is an homage to the outside world and a celebration of the planet’s natural resources. ___ Subscribe to NOWNESS here: http://bit.ly/youtube-nowness Like NOWNESS on Facebook: http://bit.ly/facebook-nowness Follow NOWNESS on Twitter: http://bit.ly/twitter-nowness Daily exclusives for the culturally curious: http://bit.ly/nowness-com Behind the scenes on Instagram: http://bit.ly/instagram-nowness Curated stories on Tumblr: http://bit.ly/tumblr-nowness Inspiration on Pinterest: http://bit.ly/pinterest-nowness Staff Picks on Vimeo: http://bit.ly/vimeo-nowness Subscribe on Dailymotion: http://www.dailymotion.com/nowness Follow NOWNESS on Google+: http://bit.ly/google-nowness

For Kiki van Eijk and Joost van Bleiswijk, creating the home they share in Eindhoven depended on constructing an entirely new frame within the shell of an existing 19th century building. Amidst bucolic surroundings on the city’s outer edge, the Dutch design couple behind Kiki & Joost re-envisioned a once-dilapidated farmhouse through their own architectural lens, rebuilding the original space around striking core elements, developed in their workshop. “The house is a city monument,” they explain, “So we could reimagine big elements like very large windows, but the structure of the house had to remain.”…read more at nowness.com _______________________________________ Subscribe to NOWNESS here: http://bit.ly/youtube-nowness Like NOWNESS on Facebook: http://bit.ly/facebook-nowness Follow NOWNESS on Twitter: http://bit.ly/twitter-nowness Daily exclusives for the culturally curious: http://bit.ly/nowness-com Behind the scenes on Instagram: http://bit.ly/instagram-nowness Staff Picks on Vimeo: http://bit.ly/vimeo-nowness
